Sorted This Way Review
by a-song-of-life-and-fandomFor those of you who may or may not have seen this video already, here’s a video on Hufflepuff Pride (and how Hufflepuffs throw the best parties) to the snappy tune of Lady Gaga’s “Born this Way”. It’s been making waves on the internet, getting recognition on sites like the Huffington Post. Considering it’s about Hufflepuffs, I think that’s saying quite a bit! It also makes an awesome wider point about how we should embrace our sorting (especially with the advent of Pottermore) because they don’t determine our future trajectory (“Or Eagle, Badger, Lion, Snake, you’re house does not your future make”).
The lyrics also feature some allusions to the books. “Don’t be a spare, just never change” is a frequent refrain in the song and serves as a reference to both how Helga took the students that the other founders wouldn’t and how Cedric is referred to as a spare at the end of GoF in the graveyard scene with Voldemort and Peter Pettigrew.
The chorus also takes on another misconception of Hufflepuff that we’re nothing special head on by boldy declaring “I’m Hufflepuff and I’m proud, no I’m not one of the crowd” and spending the second verse celebrating the traits of Hufflepuff (“Give yourself credit, you’re here because you’re dedicated and you’re fair, Hard Working, Patient and a Friend to all, so put your badger paws up in the air!”)
At the end of the day this music video parody is a home run for the group Not Literally and well worth the $.99 on iTunes or Bandcamp. So go get your badger pride on to this awesome music video and spread the love!
